RED EYE
causes: conjunctiva, episclera and sclera
trauma, inflammation and infection
infection always means inflammation but not other way around
red eye

when u have an infection it’s all these things and signs of leukocyte activity

one eye or two?

symptoms of red eye
- pain burning itching
- warm eyelids
- discharge
- blurred vision
- photophobia sensitivity to light
assessment of red eye
tests
visual acuity
general check of eye
slit lamp
fluorescein assessment
pupil reactions
intraocular pressure
URGENT RED EYE
- pain
- photobia
- reduced vision
if someone has cancer they may not have these signs
URGENT RED EYE
KERATITIS A
inflammation of cornea
- bacterial, viral, fungi, inflammatory
- signs are corneal defects and corneal ulcers
URGENT RED EYE
uveitis
- inflammation of uvea
- signs are redness inflammation and the usual signs
- steroids treatment
- usually have underlying health condition
URGENT RED EYE
orbital cellulitis
- infection of tissues behind orbital septum
- severe sight and life threatening
- signs are redness pain in eye movement and fever and lids swollen warm and sore
- needs IV antibiotics and steroids

trauma
prevents patient being able to look up
- may need surgery
NON URGENT RED EYE
subconjunctival haemorrhage
cause
red area on eye, size can vary
caused: by conjunctival blood vessel needing
can be spontaneous or trauma
treatment: cold compress goes away itself
NON URGENT RED EYE
blepharitis
- inflammation of eye lid margins
- caused by staphylococcal bacteria
- crusting of anterior lid margin
symptoms: itching burning
treatment: warm compress
NON URGENT RED EYE
meibomian gland dysfunction
- meibomian glands inflamed
- ducts become obstructed
- causes tear film instability
signs- thick secretion, foam redness
signs and treatments same as bleph
non urgent
conjunctivitis
bacterial(50% bilateral) viral (30%) and allergic (mostly bilateral)
redness
swelling
burning
discharge thick in bacterial and watery in other two
self resolving and antibiotic drops
topical antihistamine for allergic
bilateral
affects both eyes
when assessing redness of eyes u can use grading scales such as
effon
J and J
