1. stimulus is detected by a receptor cells (pain receptors in skin)
2. sensory neuron carres nerve impulse from receptor to spinal cord (CNS)
3. Impulse passes directly via an interneuron to motor neuron (at least one synapse)
4. motor neuron carries the message to the effector (muscle or gland)
5. effector carries out response (eg. moves hand away from stove)
