Q

What is reciprocal inhibition?

A

1a afferent also synapse with an inhibitory interneuron, inhibiting the alpha motor neuron of an antagonist muscle, allowing it to relax

Q

Classify and describe a flexor withdrawal reflex

A

Noxious stimuli applied to skin
Impulses conduct through afferent fibres
Polysynaptic connections made with excitatory interneurons
Causes ipsilateral flexor muscle to contract
Limb moves away

Q

Classify and describe a crossed extension reflex

A

Noxious stimuli activated pain fibres
Impulses carried via afferent vibres
Collateral sent through anterior commissure to alpha motor neuron innervating contralateral flexors and extensors
Relaxation of contralateral flexors and contraction of contralateral extensors
Extension of contralateral limb and withdrawal of ipsilateral limb

Polysynaptic
Contralateral
