relationships in an ecosystem Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is an ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environments
how can we conserve habitats and why?
national parks, poaching laws, conservation laws, recycling and management of waste, car and burning fossil fuel reduction, reduction of deforestation
this is essential for the protection of the planet to preserve it for future generations
how can we estimate population size in plants
use a quadrant and place at random, count the number of organisms you are investigating of a few random areas and get an average
how can we estimate population size in animals
capture-mark-release-recapture
what has an affect on the size of population
natural - competition, predation, natural disasters
humans - poaching, climate change, destruction of habitats, hunting
what is environmental variation
variation that is controlled by the environment e.g. tattoos, scars, contagious diseases
what is inherited variation
variation that is controlled by genes and inherited from your parents and family members e.g. inherited diseases, hair colour, eye colour
what is continuous variation
variation that has no limit on a value that can occur within a population. there are not set groups it is usually measured on a numerical scale e.g. height, weight)
what is discontinuous variation
variation that is in set groups. it is normally controlled by genetics. e.g. eye, colour, gender, hair colour
