variation Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is environmental variation
variation that is controlled by the environment e.g. tattoos, scars, contagious diseases
what is inherited variation
variation that is controlled by genes and inherited from your parents and family members e.g. inherited diseases, hair colour, eye colour
what is continuous variation
variation that has no limit on a value that can occur within a population. there are not set groups it is usually measured on a numerical scale e.g. height, weight)
what is discontinuous variation
variation that is in set groups. it is normally controlled by genetics. e.g. eye, colour, gender, hair colour
what are the 5 main kingdoms
bacteria, protists, animals, plants, fungi
what are the 2 main sub groups of animals
vertebrates, invertebrates
name the 5 main types of vertebrates
reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds, mammals
what are invertebrates
animals without backbones. arthropods are the main type they have an exoskeleton and jointed limbs. insects have 6 legs and 3 body segments. spiders have 8 legs and 2 body segments.
what is classification and taxonomy
classification is putting organisms into groups based on similar characteristics. these days it is more complicated as we have more advanced techniques, e.g. DNA analysis and therefore some organisms are becoming re-classified.
