8
Q

Ionisation - mass spectrometer

A

The gas particles are bombarded with high energy electrons to ionise them, electrons are then knocked off the particles leaving positive ions

Q

Acceleration - mass spectrometer

A

The positive ions are accelerated by an electric field

Q

Detection - mass spectrometer

A

The time taken for the positive ions to reach the detector is measured, this depends on ions mass and charge, light highly charged ions will be detected first, while heavier ions with smaller charge take longer

Q

A mass spectrum graph

A

Y-axis gives the abundance of ions, as percentage, x-axis units are given as mass/charge ration, or simply relative mass
