Reliability + validity - ICD + DSM Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is test retest reliability?
are results the same in each test?
What is inter rater reliability?
consistency in diagnosis between healthcare professionals
What did Beck find?
low reliability of DSM - the same set of symptoms were only diagnosed as the same disorder in around half of cases he studied
What factors can affect reliability of diagnosis?
Patient factors - info may be inaccurate if they have memory problems or feel shame - diagnosis may differ between psychiatrists
Clinician factors - unstructured nature of clinical interviews - questions may differ meaning different information may be gathered - different diagnosis made
- also subjectivity may cause different diagnosis - may interpret symptoms differently
What did Rosenhan find (reliability)?
across the 12 hospitals, there was consistency in diagnosis of schizophrenia in pseudo patients - DSM at the time was reliable
What is concurrent validity?
results from a study match results from a similar study at the same time
What is predictive validity?
results from a study match results from a similar study at a different time - helps with prognosis
What is aetiological validity?
examine the causes of the disorder and match it to a patients history
What did Rosenhan find (validity)?
low validity - DSM at the time diagnosed pseudo patients with schizophrenia - only had one symptom
