What is sz?
A
when an individual experiences non existent stimuli that causes perceptions of things that don’t exist - split from reality

5 features?
A
- affects 1 in 100 people
- 70% hear voices
- 25% have 1 episode and then recover
- 25% have it continually
- 50% have periods of recovery and periods of symptoms

What are positive symptoms?
A
addition to behaviour
- e.g hallucination, hearing voices, delusions, thought insertion
- can be treated
- difficult to measure

What are negative symptoms?
A
take away from normal functioning
- e.g lack of self care, flatness of emotion, social withdrawal
- difficult to treat
- can be objectively measured - questionnaire

DSM symptoms:
A
- hallucinations
- delusions
- catatonic behaviour
- negative symptoms
- disorganised speech

What factors are needed for a diagnosis (other than symptoms) ?
A
- rule out depressive and bipolar disorder
- not caused by drug abuse
