Religious Experince Otto Flashcards
(2 cards)
Through Otto we concluded that RE ….
Can’t be verified as there is no objective verification due to its ineffable nature
Otto’s argument
Ottos concept of experiencing the numinous, where consciousness encounters a sphere which goes beyond the domain of ethics which he termed as the ‘wholly other’, he describes the experience to be ‘mystrium et fascnans, invites a non rational, unexplainable awe inspiring fascination towards the divine which is Sui generis. One of a kind.
Indeed ineffabilty mean that people can’t explain their experience as it remains a private phenomena
Weakness= in Oder for a fact to be verified, it must rely on evidence that can be articulated and critiqued by others, to which ineffabilty refuses.
Although this argument has some merits, it could be countered as ineffabilty is a sign from god, as in the presence of such higher power, it is normal to not be able to term ur experience into the realm of human linguistics as god is omnipotent, therefore ineffabilty is a confirmation of god.
