Renal Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the initial compensatory response to respiratory acidosis?
plasma protein buffers
What role does mannitol play in kidney transplantation?
It decreases the risk of post-transplant kidney injury
How does mannitol work?
It draws fluid out of the edematous tissues and fluid compartments into the intravascular compartment to be eliminated by the kidney
Effects of mannitol that help decrease kidney injury include
renal vasodilation
renal prostaglandin release
scavenging of free radicals
Adverse effects of mannitol include
volume overload (in CHF pts)
hyponatremia
volume depletion w/ metabolic acidosis
What are some causes of metabolic alkalosis intraoperatively?
blood products (large volume, > 8 units, sodium citrate is metabolized to sodium bicarbonate)
gastric loses
urinary loses
bicarbonate administration
What are normal serum and urine sodium?
What is treatment for SIADH?
Water restriction, intake < 800 mL per day
What is the treatment for diabetes insipidus?
desmopressin
