Reproduction Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is reproduction?
The biological process by which new individual organisms are produced.
What is sexual reproduction?
Reproduction involving the fusion of male and female gametes, resulting in genetically unique offspring. Often a slower process.
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction that does not involve gametes, producing genetically identical offspring from one parent. Often a quicker process.
What is offspring?
The young born of living organisms; the result of reproduction.
What is genetic variation?
Differences in DNA sequences among individuals; increases diversity in sexually reproducing populations.
What is budding?
A form of asexual reproduction where a new organism grows from the body of the parent and later detaches.
What is parthenogenesis?
A type of asexual reproduction where an egg develops into an organism without fertilization.
What is binary fission?
A simple form of asexual reproduction where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
What is propagation?
The process of growing new plants from various sources like seeds, cuttings, or other plant parts. Includes runners, bulbs and tubers.
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from the male anther to the female stigma in plants.
What is fertilization?
The fusion of a sperm and egg cell to form a zygote.
What is a stamen?
The male reproductive part of a flower, consisting of the anther and filament.
What is a pistil?
The female reproductive part of a flower, including the stigma, style, ovary and ovules.
What is an anther?
The part of the stamen that produces and releases pollen.
What is a stigma?
The sticky top of the pistil that captures pollen.
What is an ovary (plant)?
The part of the pistil that contains ovules and develops into fruit after fertilization.
What is an ovule?
The structure within the ovary of a flower that develops into a seed when fertilized.
What is a seed?
A fertilized ovule that contains the embryo of a plant.
What are gametes?
Reproductive cells (sperm and egg) that unite during sexual reproduction.
What is sperm?
Male gamete involved in sexual reproduction.
What is an egg (ovum)?
Female gamete involved in sexual reproduction.
What are testes?
Male reproductive organs that produce sperm and testosterone.
What are seminal vesicles?
Glands that produce fluid that helps form semen.
What is the prostate gland?
A gland that contributes additional fluid to semen, enhancing sperm motility and longevity.
