The Respiratory System Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is cellular respiration?
The process where cells break down glucose using oxygen to produce energy (ATP)
What is gas exchange?
The process where oxygen enters the bloodstream and carbon dioxide exits through the alveoli in the lungs
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs between the air and bloodstream
What is diffusion?
The movement of gases from areas of high concentration to low concentration in the lungs
What is the function of the nasal cavity?
Warms, moistens, and filters air before it enters the respiratory system
What is the pharynx?
The throat - a passage for both air and food that connects the nasal cavity to the larynx
What is the larynx?
The voice box - contains vocal cords and helps protect the airway
What is the trachea?
The windpipe - a tube that carries air from the larynx to the bronchi
What are bronchi?
Two main airways that branch from the trachea and lead to each lung
What are bronchioles?
Smaller branches of the bronchi that lead to the alveoli
What is the diaphragm?
The main breathing muscle that contracts and flattens when inhaling, and relaxes when exhaling
What is the epiglottis?
A flap of tissue that covers the larynx when swallowing to prevent food from entering the airways
What is the function of the respiratory system?
To facilitate gas exchange, bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide
