responsible for infertile mucus, opaque, sicky thick, non stretchable, non fern pattern when dry

4
Q

describe the follicular phase

A

as dominant follicle develops it produces increasing amoutns of follicular fluid containing estrogen
estrogen stimulated thickening of the endometrium
increase in serum estrogwn suppresses secretion of FSH and favours secretion of LH
LH stimulates ovulation

6
Q

what is the luteal phase

A

follows ovulation
cavity of ruptured follicle is replaced by the corpus luteum (secretes progesterone and some oestrogen)
progesterone stimuales secretory changes in endometrium to prepare for implantation
if no fertilisation then corpus luteum begins to regress and decrease in progesterone and estrogen

7
Q

what is the menstrual phase

A

corpus luteum degenerates
cessation of progesterone and estrogen production by the corpus luteum
endometrium degeneration and menstruation occurs
drop in blood levels of oestrogen and progesterone stimulate production of FSH and new cycle begins

Q

what happens when LH surges

A

oocyte resumes meiosis

previously stopped at prophase in meiosis I continues until metaphase II where it stops

13
Q

how do we detect ovulation

A

lutein is an orange/yello carotenoid pigment
granulosa cells luteinised
increase production progestogens, progesterone and 17a hydroxyprogesterone

16
Q

what does LH do in males

A

regulate testosterone secretion

17
Q

what hormone decreases secretion of FSH

18
Q

what do sertoli cells secrete

A

androgen binding globulin and inhibin

19
Q

where are sertoli cells found

A

in seminiferous tubules

20
Q

what decreases the release of GnRh and LH

21
Q

how does estrogen increase the water content of the uterus

A

mildly accelerates na and h20 reabsorption by kidney tubulues

22
Q

what does a high oestrogen concentration do to FSH

A

high oestrogen concentration inhibits secretion of FSH and prolactin

23
Q

what does a low oestrogen concentration after pregnancy help stimulate

A

secretion of prolactin for breastfeeding

24
Q

what does a high estrogen do to LH

A

stimulate the production of LH

25
what does progesterone do to smooth muscle
relax it
