reproductive system Flashcards
(32 cards)
where does sperm go?
sperm is released from the sustentacular cell cytoplasm, and enters the lumen of the seminiferous tubule
what does a primordial follicle contain?
primary oocyte, a single layer of squamous follicle cells
what does a primary follicle contain?
primary oocyte, a layer of cuboidal cells and the follicle cells are now granulosa cells
what does the secondary follicle contain?
primary oocyte, multiple layers of granulosa cells
what does the mature follicle contain?
contains secondary oocyte
what does the antral follicle contain?
primary oocyte, granulosa cells, and an antrum
what is the corpus luteum and its function?
the ruptured follicle underwent ovulation and its yellowish, secretes estrogen and progesterone to help the uterus to develop
what is the corpus albicans?
degenerated corpus luteum, white connective tissue scar
testes and function?
produce sperm and produce androgens which are male sex hormones
what are the seminiferous tubules?
up to four in each lobule in testes, tightly coiled structure where sperm is produced
what does the seminiferous tubules contain?
spermatogonia and sustentacular cells
what do the sustentacular cells do?
support, protect, and nourish the developing sperm
what is the function of the interstitial cells?
produce and secrete androgens
what are ejaculatory ducts?
each will empty its contents into the urethra, passes through the prostate gland, but does not include the prostatic secretions
what is the epididymis and its function?
comma shaped organ, receives sperm from testes, gains mobility and stores sperm until ejaculation
what is the vas deferens?
18 inch tube that runs from testes to the prostate gland, travels within spermatic cord, winds around bladder and merges with the duct from the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct
what is the function of the accessory glands?
produce a nutritious, alkaline fluid for the sperm
what are the seminal vesicles?
each lies on the posterior wall of the bladder, each merges with the vas deferens to form the ejaculatory ducts
what are the accessory glands?
seminal vesicles, prostate glands, and bulbourethral glands
what is the prostate gland?
single chestnut shaped organ, inferior to bladder, contains the first part of the urethra
what is the internal anatomy of the ovary?
the cortex contains ovarian follicles and the medulla contains the blood vessels
what is the bulbourethral gland?
each gland is pea shaped and lies within the urogenital diaphragm
what is the function of the ovary?
to produce oocytes and sex hormones estrogen and progesterone
what is the function of the uterus?
site for implantation of a fertilized oocyte, site for development of soon to become an embryo
