What are ovaries?
A woman has two ovaries that take turns releasing one ovum about every 28 days. This is called ovulation.
What is a follicle?
Follicles are located in the ovaries and each contains a single ovum, bringing it to full maturity.
What is the function of the Fallopian tubes?
The ovum released by the follicle travels through the Fallopian tubes to reach the uterus. An ovum survives between 24-48 hours in the Fallopian tubes where it can be fertilized.
What is the uterus?
A hollow pear-shaped organ where a zygote develops if the ovum is fertilized by spermatozoa.
What is the endometrium?
The inner layer of the womb/uterus, called the endometrium, is the lining that will be shed monthly.
What is the cervix?
The lower part of the uterus that connects it to the vagina, allowing the passage of menstrual blood and sperm. It produces mucus and must dilate during childbirth.
What is the vagina?
The passage into which the penis penetrates to release sperm. The baby also leaves the uterus through the vagina during birth.
What is the vulva?
The external genitalia consisting of the labia (majora & minora), the clitoris, and the hymen.
What is the clitoris?
