Reproductive System Review Flashcards
(59 cards)
What is mitosis?
A type of cell division that results in daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
What is meiosis?
A type of cell division that results in daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, as in the production of gametes and plant spores.
If the diploid chromosome number is 66, what is the haploid chromosome number?
33.
What is the diploid abbreviation for female?
2n XX.
What is the diploid abbreviation for male?
2n XY.
What type of cell division do most cells of the body undergo?
Mitosis.
What type of cell division do reproductive cells undergo?
Meiosis.
Where does spermatogenesis take place?
In the seminiferous tubules of the testes.
Where does oogenesis take place?
In the follicles of the ovaries.
What do interstitial cells produce?
Hormones such as androgens and testosterone.
What is the role of testosterone?
Responsible for developing secondary sex characteristics.
What does the head of the sperm contain?
The nucleus (contains all genetic material).
What covers the head of the sperm?
Acrosome.
What is the function of the midpiece of the sperm?
It is the power plant of the sperm, containing a large concentration of mitochondria.
What structure connects the testes to the scrotum?
Gubernaculum.
What muscle allows the body to adjust the position of the testes?
Cremaster muscle.
What does the spermatic cord contain?
Blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and vas deferens.
What is the pampiniform plexus?
A meshwork of tiny veins surrounding the testicular artery.
What are the two layers of connective tissue surrounding the testes called?
Vaginal tunics (visceral and parietal layer).
What is the tunica albuginea?
A heavy, fibrous connective tissue that encloses each teste.
What is a cryptorchid patient?
A patient that does not have 2 testes in the scrotum.
What do Sertoli Cells provide?
Nutritional support to developing sperm and prevent immune response against sperm.
Where are sperm stored and matured?
In the epididymis.
What is the function of the vas deferens?
Transports sperm from the epididymis to the urethra during ejaculation.
