what happened during the 45 days?
this was the time between Mussolini’s dismissal and his escape

Demonstrations in favour of peace took place all across Italy and the Germans took control of Rome and Marshall Badoglio’s government held peace talks in secret with the allies
where and when was Mussolini imprisoned?
on the 28th of august 1943, Mussolini was transferred to a prison on Gran Sasso which is the highest mountain in the Ambruzzi region
how was the Republic of Salo created?
on the 13th of September, Mussolini met with Hitler at the Nazi control centre in East Prussia where Hitler demanded that Mussolini return to Italy at the head of a new fascist government that the Nazis would establish.
what were the weaknesses of the republic?
the new regime was heavily reliant on German arms and they only controlled a small part of northern Italy which was completely the opposite of Mussolini’s previous regime which aimed to create an autarky as well as the lack of support that Mussolini had during the war due to repeated military failures.

it was largely made up of radical fascists who had been a part of the violent black shirt militia such as Farinacci

it became a brutal regime with which spawned a feared militia which included between 50,000 and 140000 men as well as a navy and an air force
