Research methods Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are aims?
General statements that describe the purpose of an investigation.
What is a hypothesis?
A statement made at the start of the study that clearly states the relationship between variables stated by the theory.
What are the two types of hypotheses?
Directional and non-directional
What is a directional hypothesis?
A hypothesis where the researcher makes it clear the sort of difference that is anticipated between two conditions/ groups of people. It will include words such as more, less, higher, lower.
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
States that there is a difference between conditions or groups of people but the difference isn’t specified.
eg people who drink 7-up differ to those who don’t
How do psychologist choose which hypothesis to use?
When there is previous research of the study a directional hypothesis is used when there’s not a non-directional hypothesis is used.
What are the different types of experiment?
Lab, field, quasi and natural
What is a lab experiment?
An experiment that takes place in a highly controlled environment where the researcher manipulates the independent variable and records the effect on the dependant variable whilst maintaining strict control of extraneous variables.
