Research Methods - Things I Forget Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an extraneous variable?
Anything that can affect your results, exists across all independent variables
What is a confounding variable?
Varies systematically with the independent variable, changes a the independent variable changes, e.g. day and night
What do participants experience with independent groups
One condition
What do participants experience with repeated measures
Both conditions
Systematic sampling?
Every nth person
Stratified sampling?
Compositions reflects proportion of people in target population
Field experiment?
-randomly allocated ps
Controlled iv
Uncontrolled surrounds
Natural
-randomly allocated ps
—iv not controlled
What is the difference between a double and single blind?
Single - participant doesn’t know what condition they’re in
Double - participant and investigator don’t know what condition they’re in
What 4 ethic concerns do you have to think about?
Consent, deception, right to withdraw, protection from harm
What 4 observations questions do you have to think about
(C)overt, natural or controlled, participant or non participant, structured on unstructured data
What is the difference between time sampling and event sampling
Time - length of time it happens
Event - number of times it happens
What 4 things do you have to think about when considering whether to do a structured or unstructured interview
Replication
Richness of data
Interviewer bias
Social desirability
