What are some factors which affect food supply?
War,poverty,climate,lack of water,technology
What does food insecurity, food security and famine mean?
Food insecurity is where there is no reliable access to food
Food security is reliable access to food
Famine is a scarcity of food
What are some factors that increase food supply?
Biotechnology: the genetic modification of food that causes them to grow more
Hydroponics and aeroponics: Hydroponics is where crops are grown in mineral rich soil and gravel. Aeroponics is where crops are sprayed with this mineral rich water
Irrigation: the natural watering of the land via sprinklers to grow crops in drying areas
What are some sustainable food supplies?
Organic farming: growing of crops without chemicals, it conserves water and provides for a better soil health
Urban farming: the cultivation of food in urban areas, it provides jobs and producers fresher food
Permaculture: food production which follows the natural ecosystem. It’s more bio friendly and reduces fossil fuels
Rice fish farming: use mutual relaishonship as fish poo help crops grow and fish eat dead leaves
What does water surplus and water deficit mean?
Water surplus is when there is lots of water and water deficit is where there is little water.
What happened to energy usage through the years?
In the 1980 they were heavily dependent on fossil fuels but as we get to the 2000s more renewable sources are used
What are the positives and negatives of the large scale agricultural scheme in almeria?
Positives : provided many jobs, sources 40% if Europe’s food, cheaper and more available
Negatives: lots of plastic waste, illegal immigrants, the burning of waste, people get treated badly
What is fracking?
It’s used for the extraction of oil from the ground by drilling deep down and using a mixture of sand water and chemicals to create cracks in the rock to extract the oil
