respiration Flashcards

1
Q

respirometer

A

can be used to measure oxygen uptake of living organisms.soda lime is used to abosrb co2 produced.Use a syringe to set manometer fluid level and leave for 20 mins before measuring distance moved by fluid.set up a control tube containing same mass of beads .Caluclate volume of oxygen uptake by doing distance times 2pir

Q

anaerobic repsiration in mammals

A

pyruvate gains hydrogen from reduced nad forming lactate catalysed by lactase dehydrogenase

Q

does respiration require aqueous medium

A

yes so enzymes and substrate can collide,In dry conditions movement is limited

Q

how do you respire proteins

A

protein hydrolyzed by protease enzymes so amino acids are produced. Amino acids enter Krebs cycle after deamination.Deamination doesn’t release hydrogens so the ratio of hydrogen and carbon is lower so less energy produced

Q

substrate level phosphorylation

A

2 atp made from glycolysis when tp is converted to pyruvate.Net yield of 2 atp.1 ATP produced per turn of the krebs cycle

8
Q

why does aerobic respiration yield fewer atp than expected

A

some atp used to actively transport pyruvate to mitchondria
not all protons move back through atp synthase as inner mitochondrial membrane is leaky so atp not made
some energy released in etc is used released as heat
