Respiratory system Flashcards
(18 cards)
what is the respiratory system comprised of
lungs and associated airways
function of system
ventilation and gas exchange between atmosphere and blood.
what is ventilation
breathing in and out, so air can enter the body.
Allows oxygen from air to be diffused into bloodstream and transported to cells.
what type of cells need oxygen for aerobic respiration
all cells.
what does aerobic respiration produce
a waste product-carbon dioxide
why must carbon dioxide be removed from body
it is toxic to humans
characteristics of lungs
-two
-found in thoracic cavity
parts of lung in order
-Larynx (voice box)
-trachea (wind pipe)
-Bronchi (left or right bronchus)
-Bronchioles
-Alveoli
function of alveoli
site of gas exchange between air and blood.
what is the trachea supported by
c shaped rings of cartilage
what is the lungs lined on the outside with
a moist membrane called the pleura
what does the pleura do
continues around the inner thoracic cavity until two pleural layers slide over one another with ease and without friction.
This allows the lungs to move when the chest wall is
what is the thoracic cavity and its function
a large hollow area where organs can be stored, and acts as protection for these organs.
what protects the lungs
The rib cage, made of rib bones
what are rib bones held together by
intercostal muscles
characteristics of intercostal muscles
antagonistic-so when one contracts the other relaxes
each rib bone contains internal and external intercostal muscle
diaphragm characteristics
-found below rib cage
-separates chest cavity from adnominal cavity
function of intercostal and diaghram
causes ventilation (the mechanism of breathing)
