17
Q

How does the body maintain ph balance?

A

Exhale carbon dioxide.

18
Q

Anaphylactic shock

A

Severe allergic reaction.
Can be life threatening
Needs epipen.

19
Q

Apnea

A

Absence of breathing

20
Q

Dyspnea

A

Difficulty breathing

21
Q

Orthopnea

A

SOB when lying flat or supine.

22
Q

Hyperventilation

A

Rapid deep breathing
Due to panic attack, infection, or another medical issue

23
Q

Hypoventilation

A

Shallow breathing

24
Q

Bronchitis

A

Inflammation of the bronchi
Acute or chronic
Caused by infection viral or bacteria

25
What are the signs and symptoms of acute bronchitis?
Phlemy cough Fever SOB Wheezing Fatigue
26
How to manage acute bronchitis?
Drink plenty of fluids Rest Stop smoking
27
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic lung disorder that blocks airways causing difficulty breathing No cure
28
What are the 2x types of COPD?
Chronic bronchitis Emphysema
29
What is the most common cause of COPD?
Smoking ++ Air pollution
30
What is the difference between chronic bronchitis and emphysema?
Emphysema affects the alveoli and barrelled chest as air is trapped. Chronic bronchitis has excess amounts of mucus.
31
How to manage COPD
Fowlers or semi fowlers position Encourage fluids Low dose of oxygen Meds to open airways quit smoking
32
Asthma
Reversible airway obstruction and inflammation Airway passages narrow Muscles tighten
33
What can trigger asthma?
Pollen, dust, mold, animal dander and hair, exercises, cold air, smoke, stress
34
What are the signs and symptoms of asthma?
SOB Rapid pulse Wheezing coughing production of mucus.
35
How to manage asthma?
Avoid triggers Inhalers Manage stress
36
Pneumonia
Infection of lung tissue Alveoli fills with pus, mucus and fluid. Can result in death
37
What can cause pneumonia?
Bacteria fungi viruses, You can get aspiration pneumonia caused by inhaling food and fluid
38
What are the signs and symptoms of pneumonia?
Weakness Cough with thick mucus (green, yellow, brown) Fever and chills Chest pain Rapid or shallow breathing Cyanosis Confusion
39
Who are most at risk of a pneumonia?
Very young or old Immune compromised people
40
How to manage pneumonia?
Rest Encourage fluids Oxygen High fowlers position Antibiotics
41
Tuberculosis
Infection with TB bacteria May lay dormant Fever, fatigue, night sweats cough Fatal but treatable with meds
42
T or F a severe allergic reaction can result in anaphylaxis
True
