Literacy rates
Percentage of people with the ability to read and write in a country
GDP
The “Gross domestic product”, The total amount of money made by a country’s goods and services divided by its population
Foreign aid
Also known as international aid, assistance (money, resources) given by MEDC governments / organizations to people in LEDC countries
Fertility rates
Average number of babies born per woman in a country
Dependency ratio
Ratio of dependents (people not in working age, under 16 -over 65) to working age population
HDI
Stands for the “human development index”. A combination indicator, measuring education (average years schooling), health (life expectancy) and wealth (GNI per capita)
MEDC
Stands for “more economically developed country”. A rich country with a strong economy, good infrastructure, and high living standards. Example: UK, USA, Japan
LEDC
Stands for “Less economically developed country”. A poorer country with weaker economy, limited infrastructure, and lower living standards. Example: Ethiopia, Nepal, Haiti
Country’s net population growth
Birth rate - death rate + migration (immigrants - emigrants)
DTM
Demographic Transition model, shows the birth and death rate as a country moves through its 5 “stages”
GNI
Stands for the “Gross national income”,
Mortality rates
Death rate of a population over a specific period of time
Indicators of global development
The indicators of global develop with examples are:
-Demographic (population growth rate)
-Economic/wealth (Gross national income)
-Political (Religious freedom)
-Environmental (fertile land area)
-Health (Infant mortality rate)
-Technological (internet connections/speed)
