Q

What was important about Antioch?

A

It was founded by Bohemond in 1098 when he took control of it, and the other crusade leaders supported his claim to the region despite their oaths to Alexios Komnenus when he provided an entry into Antioch. It was also less vulnerable than Tripoli and Edessa which made it a more valuable region to the Crusaders. Although, this meant Bohemond was now under pressure from both the Byzantine Empire and the Muslim powers of Syria.

Q

How did Bohemond try and control a safe port?

A

He wanted to make Antioch a viable state, so he set his sights on the port of Latakia. Despite besieging it in 1099, Raymond of St Gilles forced him to abandon the siege and Malik-Ghazi captured Bohemond later. The port was later captured by Bohemond’s cousin Tancred, who captured Latakia in 1103 as Bohemond waited to be ransomed. Although, this then led to tension with the Byzantine Empire which wasn’t resolved even after the 1108 Treaty of Devol.

Q

What was Bohemond’s main conflict with the Muslims?

A

A Muslim coalition army from Mosul and Mardin that marched on Edessa in 1104. Bohemond responded by creation of coalition forces to attack Harran which would have isolated Aleppo and Damascus and split the Seljuk states, but the loss during this battle led to him requesting support for another crusade from Pope Paschal II, which was defeated at the Battle of Durazzo in 1107 by a Turkish-Byzantine coalition army led by Alexios Komnenus.

What was the 1108 Treaty of Devol?

A

A treaty that Alexios forced Bohemond to sign after defeating him at the Battle of Durazzo in 1107. This treaty meant that Bohemond had to return territories captured in Anatolia and give him Antioch and Edessa as a fief (state of land).

Q

How effective was Bohemond II as a leader?

A

Not very effective, he had to rely on Tancred, Roger of Salerno and Baldwin II to take his place as regents (state administrators while the leader is absent) until he came of age. Also, he was killed in 1130 while campaigning against Danishmend territories.
