Riekert And Drotar 1999 Flashcards
(25 cards)
The aim
To assess the implications of non-participant or incomplete participation in research into treatment adherence for a adolescence with diabetes
Methodology and sample
94 families were originally asked to take part in the study 80 families origin consented, but only 52 completed the study
How many participants completed the study?
52
What was the age range?
11 to 18
How long has a diagnosis been made?
For over a year
What type of diabetes were they investigating?
Type one diabetes
How many non-returners and non-consents were there from the original 94
28 non-returners and 14 non-consents
What was the hypothesis?
That those participants who refused to participate in the study about treatment appearance which show less treatment adherence
What was the inclusion criteria?
Participants did not have any addition illness or development delay
How were participants recruited?
Recruited via a clinic for monitoring their diabetes, which makes it a opportunity sample
How was data collected?
The adolescence completed a semi structured clinical interview, using the adherence and IDDM questionnaire R
What did the attendance and IDDM questionnaire R assess?
Adherence to treatment, diet, glucose, testing, and preparedness for hyperglycemia
What type of data did the semi structured interview using the adherence ID and questionnaire R gather?
Quantitative data
What other measurements were used to gather data?
A number of blood sugar test used by a reflectance meter
Metabolic control as measured at the clinic every time they attended
What did the parents complete?
They completed a questionnaire, asking about demographic data about the whole family group such as family background, age, ethnicity, and how long they had diabetes and parenting education in the background
What happened after the interview?
After completion of the interview, the family was given a package of questionnaires with a prepaid return envelope to take home
What was in the package of questionnaires?
A 30 minute questionnaire for the parent concerning the relationship with their adolescent
And a one hour questionnaire for the child concerning the relationship with their parents
How long after the interview were the families called as a reminder
Families who did not return the questionnaire in 10 days where called to remind them
How many medical charts were reviewed and why?
Researchers also reviewed the medical charts for all 94 adolescent who were initially requested to take part in the study to obtain the number of blood glucose tests per day and metabolic control levels
What demographic data was collected
Demographic data of the families who refused to consent parts were also obtained
What were the results?
1-Demographic characteristics were similar for all three groups the groups being participants who completed participants who did not return questionnaire, also known as non-returners and participants who did not consent also known as non-consenters
2-however father’s education was seemed to make a difference. It was higher for participants who completed then for the non-returner group.
3-the adolescence of non-return your families, tested their blood glucose that levels significantly less than those who returned or the non-con centers
4-a adolescent of the non-returner families also had significantly lower rates of adherence than those of families who returned the questionnaire
What was the conclusion?
Lower adherence to treatment regime by adolescence is associated with lower participation in adherence studies, by adolescence and their families
What was one strength of the study?
One strength is at the study, used a number of methods in order to ensure that the level of appearance was measured accurately for example, the adolescence completed the clinical interview and the parents completed a demographics questionnaire, metabolic rates, and the use of blood sugar equipment was also measured this is the strength as the results of the study are non-relied on one method each method has its own weaknessso using more than one minimize the weakness and increases the validity of research.
What is one weakness of the study
Is it the sample was only taken from one clinic and was based upon one type of illness diabetes also, there were a number of potential participants were asked to take part, but did not consent to be a part of the study. It may be that something particular about this type of illness or people that want to take place in the study in the first placethis means that the results found would not be generalizable to wardrobe population or to other illnesses
