Risk And Poison Flashcards
(10 cards)
Risk
How likely something is to happen + the severity of that thing that can possibly happen
Probably + damage severity
Risk assessment
Estimate how much harm a hazard can cause
Risk management
Deciding whether or not to reduce a certain risk and at what cost it would be to do so
Risk assessment steps
1.Hazard identification
2.Assessment
3.Risk characterization
Dose response assessment
What effect does a particular dose of exposure have on people?
LD 50
Median Lethal Dose. The lower the number the more dangerous
The amount of a substance needed to kill half the population of the study. Determined by the curve
High LD= low toxicity
Low LD= high toxicity
If it takes a higher dose to kill people, that’s better than a lower dose
Variability in dose response
Everyone’s body is different. Some may be more and less vulnerable
Some factors
- Age
-Health
-Substance
Synergistic Effects
The sum of chemicals may be deadlier than just the individual chemicals by themselves. Their synergy may make the worse
Epidemiology
Why some get sick and others don’t in a population. How does exposure differ across the population?
Government toxic risk steps
