Starting Vocab + Hazards Flashcards
(14 cards)
Environmental Health
Focuses on factors in our environment that cause disease
Disease
Any abnormal change to the body’s condition that impairs bodily function
There are 2 types- communicable (infections) and non-communicable (non-infectious)
Morbidity
Causing illness
Mortality
Causing DEATH
Risk
How bad something is + how likely it is to happen
Severity+ probability
Physical hazards
Result from processes in nature. Example: UV rays from the sun may give you a sunburn
Precautionary Principle
We do not need to know all of the details in order to take action on something that can possibly be harmful in the future. Instead, we can take precautions earlier to circumvent any possible harm. Better be safe than sorry
Chemical hazards
Synthetic chemical hazards. Coming from things like pesticides and even natural toxins like venom.
Biological hazards
Any hazard coming from another organism. Ex: parasites, bacteria, infectious disease, viruses
Cultural Hazards
Hazards that derive from how or where you live your life.
Ex: lung cancer because you smoke. Obesity because you don’t have access to healthy affordable food
Geo-hazards
Hazards that come from thi by s like natural disasters. Think about the lithospheres. From tectonic movement. People can exacerbate these hazards.
Subset of physical (nature) hazards
Ex:earthquakes,volcanes,landslides,tsunami’s,ext.
Infectious disease
Can be spread from person to person. Caused from the invasion of a pathogen into the body. (A foreign organism making you sick)
Non- infectious disease
Disease not caused by foreign organism. Happen due to environment, genetics, and lifestyle
Why has lifespan increased? Why aren’t we all dead yet?
Modern medicine,nutrition, and science.
Our nutrition is better because we can produce way more food than we could before for example. (This is why our carrying capacity has gone up significantly and the world can support more people and also why our environmental footprint has increased.)
People no longer die from something like the flu that they used to die from in mass amounts, we now die from more gradual things. No infectious diseases like heart disease
