rods + cones Flashcards
(20 cards)
what light do rods respond well in?
low light conditions
what light to cones respond well in?
bright light conditions
rods are specialised forβ¦
night vision
cones are specialised forβ¦
day vision
do rods process colour vision?
no
do cones process colour vision?
yes
which one processes colour vision?
cones
which one specialises in day vision?
cones
which one specialises in night vision?
rods
which one responds well to low levels of light?
rods
which one responds well to bright light conditions?
cones
which one processes fine detail?
cones
- responsible for high visual acuity/sharpness
do rods process fine detail?
no
do cones process fine detail?
cones
- responsible for high visual acuity/sharpness
where is the location of rods in the eye?
mostly on the outer edges of the retina.
where is the location of cones in the eye?
mostly densely concentrated in the centre of the retina (the forea)
what is the forea?
area in the centre of the retina where there is a high concentration of cones.
- this is why in order to see object in fine detail and true colours its important to look directly at it, ensuring the image is focused on the forea.
which one allows peripheral vision?
rods
do rods allow peripheral vision?
yes, because they are located on the outer edges of the retina
do cones allow peripheral vision?
no
