the cerebral cortex. Flashcards
(24 cards)
what is the role of the cerebral cortex?
It helps us think, feel, move, and understand the world.
initiates voluntary movements
where is the cerebral cortex?
the outer layer of the brain.
why is it wrinkled?
so that it can fit into the limited amount of space in the skull.
what is it involved in?
it is involved with more complex mental abilites.
what are some examples of the complex mental abilities?
- perception
- learning
- memory
- language
- thinking
- problem solving
what are the 3 main categories of the cerebral cortex?
sensory areas, motor areas and association.
what is a sensory area?
receives and processes sensory information from the body and environment
what is a motor area?
initiates voluntary movements.
what is an association area?
itβs a brain region that combines information to help with complex thinking and actions.
how does the cerebral cortex help with sense?
it processes what we see, hear, touch, and more.
what movement function does the cerebral cortex have?
it controls voluntary (on purpose) movements.
what thinking skills is the cerebral cortex linked to?
language, problem-solving, and symbolic thinking.
how does the cerebral cortex help regulate our emotions?
it helps regulate and control our emotions.
does each part of the cerebral cortex do the same thing?
no, different parts have different jobs (this is called localisation of function).
what are complex mental abilities?
these are advanced thinking skills we use to learn, solve problems, and understand the world.
name some examples of complex mental abilities.
- problem-solving
- decision-making
- planning
- reasoning
- language use
- abstract thinking
- creativity
- learning from experience
which part of the brain is most involved in complex mental abilities?
the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobe.
where are the association area found?
around sensory and motor areas in the cerebral cortex.
what do association areas help us do?
they help with thinking, learning, memory, problem-solving, and combining different types of information.
where is the motor area located?
in the frontal lobe
what is the main part of the motor area called?
the primary motor cortex
are motor areas all around the brain?
no, but mostly clustered in specific regions responsible for controlling movement.
how are motor, association and sensory areas arranged in the cerebral cortex?
motor and sensory areas are specialised zones in different lobes.
association areas surround and connect these zones to combine info and handle complex thinking.
where are sensory areas found?
parietal lobe for touch, occipital lobe for vision, temporal lobe for hearing
