Role of Neuroplasticity in Brain Injury Flashcards
(5 cards)
Neuroplasticity
The brain’s ability to form new neural connections and neural pathways and to fundamentally change how it is wired.
Why does rewiring occur?
Rewiring of the brain occurs in response to environmental experiences like disease, injury or new learning experiences.
What are the two different types of plasticity?
Functional and Structural
Functional plasticity
The brain’s ability to adapt and reorganize its activity in response to learning, experience or injury. It describes how neurons can form new connections or strengthen existing ones to compensate for lost functions or enhance existing ones.
Structural plasticity
The brain’s ability to change its physical structure in response to learning, experience, or environmental factors. It involves the growth, pruning and reorganization of neural connections.
