Spinal Reflexes Flashcards
(6 cards)
Autonomic Response
Receptors in the body receive sensory stimuli from the environment and from internal factors and there is an unconscious or automatic response
Example: We don’t consciously decide to dilate and constrict our pupils.
Spinal Reflexes
Controlled within the spinal cord without the involvement of the brain.
Enables faster responses mainly for protection from danger.
Monosynaptic Reflex Arc
Made up of only two neurons (one sensory and one motor).
Example: Patellar tendon reflex.
Polysynaptic Reflex Arc
Made up of multiple neurons, with one or more interneurons connecting the sensory and motor neurons.
Example: withdrawal of hand after being burnt.
5 major points of a spinal reflex
Receptor, sensory neuron, control center (interneuron), motor neuron, effector.
Conscious responses
Taking deliberate action to avoid danger; involves the brain.
Example: Hammering a nail back in so no one steps on it.
