One of the main characteristics of this Shakespearean play,
is the emotional journey that it takes the audience on, only to finish with a tragic ending between the two star-crossed lovers
This is referred to as
catharsis
The whole play, beginning to end,
captures the audience in an emotional frenzy, from the very opening prologue, to the finale speech said after the two main characters take their lives.
Shakespeare cleverly attains the audience by
captivating them in the rich love story between the two protagonists and through all the obstacles that they overcome to be with each other
Yet despite the countless ways that their love could have defied all of that,
Shakespeare ended the play with a double suicide, reminding the audience how much they suffered and lost, just to be with each other in the end.
However, this tragic ending also brings an end to the
longstanding feud between the Capulet and Montague families
Capulet begins this reconcile by addressing Montague as his “brother,”
then asking for his hand in friendship.
Shakespeare ensures that the audience receives the full catharsis experience
that a tragedy should contain
