Romeo and Juliet; paragraph 2 Flashcards
(13 cards)
There are many reasons as to why Romeo and Juliet ends so tragically
but one of the main reasons was because of the protagonist’s character flaws and incorrect judgements
Romeo and Juliet are
notorious for their impetuosity
Right from act 1, Romeo’s impetuosity is demonstrated
as he pines over Rosaline, a woman who he claims to be in ‘love’ with, even though she obviously does not have the same requited love as he does.
His ‘love’ for her is more infatuation rather than love
as he was overwhelmed by sudden emotion, displaying his foolishness and impetuosity.
Romeo and Juliet both act rashly when they first meet
at the party, claiming to be in love with each other at first sight.
This is a clear example of the two star-crossed lovers
acting foolishly
Juliet then asks her nurse to go
and ask the young man, whom she had just kissed, what his name was.
She then continued to say
wedding bed quote
Juliet did not even know who she is in love with,
but she was already considering marriage, another clear sign of her impetuosity
Finally, when Romeo discovers that Juliet is dead in the tomb,
he hastily makes the decision that he must preserve his love for her by ending his life as well.
He states that he will
quote, deciding that he must die.
However, if he had just waited and not acted so quickly,
Juliet would have woken up in time.
Based on Aristotles 5 characteristics of a tragedy,
one which claimed there has to be hamartia, Romeo and Juliet can clearly be confirmed as a tragedy.
