Romeo And Juliet; paragraph 3 Flashcards
(11 cards)
This play can be deemed as a tragedy due to the
excessive pride that the characters acquired.
This is demonstrated through the
ongoing feud between the Montagues and Capulets
As stated in the prologue ‘quote’
showed that both households continued this feud, not wanting to relieve the “ancient grudge” due to their lack of humility.
The many fight scenes in this play
clearly support the statement made in the prologue.
The most important fight scene, between Mercutio, Romeo and Tybalt
certainly displays the excessive pride they shared.
Mercutio’s haughty pride made him feel that
Romeo should not submit to Tybalt’s harassment when he yells out “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission”, but had he not challenged Tybalt and instead walked away from the fight, he would have remained alive.
Excessive pride was also demonstrated in both Romeo and Juliet
acting selfishly believing that they could defy social order, their parents and fate.
However, it was Friar Laurence
that that acted the most selfishly, conducting the plan that in the end, killed both the young lovers.
He believed that
he had the power to end the longstanding feud by secretly marrying the two lovers.
Even though his plan did ultimately end the feud,
it was in the worst way possible.
Excessive pride, another characteristic that Aristotle believed was necessary, was
a very problematic trait that some of the characters had that led to the tragic downfall.
