Ao1 - what was the aim of study 1
- to see if sane people who gained admission to a psychiatric hospital would be found out to be sane
- to find out what it is like to be admitted into a psychiatric hospital and what it feels like to be labelled as insane
Ao1 - how many pseudopatients were involved in the study and what were there occupations
8 participants (5 men and 3 women)

Ao1 - how many hospitals were they admitted to and where were they located
12 hospitals located in 5 different states on the East and West coast of America, 1 was a private hospital, some were old and some were newly re done
Ao1 - what were the symptoms the 8 participants claimed to be experiencing and what mental illness did this resemble
hearing voices that are usually unclear and are the same sex as the participant, hearing 3 words ‘empty’, ‘hollow’ and ‘thud’
these symptoms resembled existential psychosis
Ao1 - what did the participants lie about to the hospitals
their name, symptoms and their occupation (if it resembled psychology)
Ao1 - what did participants do once they were a patient in the hospital
they seized all symptoms, wrote down notes which was first done privately but then done openly and they had no idea of when they would be discharged

ranged from 7 to 52 days with the average being 19
Ao1 - what three words were used by nurses to describe the pseudo-patients
friendly, cooperative and exhibited no abnormal indications
Ao1 - what were participants diagnosed with when discharged
all expect 1 was diagnosed with schizophrenia ‘in remission’
the other was diagnosed with maniac depression

35/119 patients voiced suspicions of the pseudo-patients, said ‘you’re not crazy, you’re a journalist or a professor’
Ao3 - what are 2 points concerning the generalisability of the study
its high as study was conducted in 12 different hospitals, some were old hospitals, some were newly built 1 was a private hospital and some were understaffed
its low as the study was only conducted in 5 states in America showing that it is ethnocentric
Ao3 - what is the application of the study
the study led to an increase in training for nurses and better treatment of patients in hospitals, psychiatric hospitals worldwide evaluated their admission systems
and the DMS ll was reformed to the DSM lll
Ao3 - what are 4 validity points concerning the study
high as it involves quantitative data for example patients were answered by nurses 0.4% of the time
low as pseudo-patients only recorded and noted down negative observations
low as there was a 9th pseudo-patient Harry Lando who was completely removed from the study as he found the experiance to be positive
high as it has primary data, however this could mean that it is susceptible to researcher bias
Ao3 - what is a reliability point with a counter argument
low as they did not all follow a standardised procedure, for example one pseudo-patient fell in love with a nurse, however they did all follow a standardised procedure at the start as they said the same symptoms

low as nurses and doctors were deceived
low as the staff were then labelled as being bad at their job
high as the pseudo-patients had fake names so were not labelled themselves as having schizophrenic which in some cultures has negative conatations
