Cognitive errors- faulty thinking
Schemata- patterns of maladaptive thinking
What is attributional bias
How a person responds to failure
Maladaptive attributional style- more emphasis on fault within themselves whereas non depressed people will blame external factors -external attributions
What causes faulty thinking
Negative automatic thoughts
Schemas
Schemas are built up through experiences and developing positive and negative beliefs of the world
We have self schemas- these may be negative in those with depression (may be developed by regular criticism) may lead a person to interpret all information about themselves in a negative way
Overcoming depression
Change the maladaptive thought interpretations by considering the positive instead of the negative
The key point
It is the way we perceive and think about the problem rather than the problem itself
