Valentine And Mesout Flashcards
(9 cards)
Aim
To test the high physiological arousal effects EWT recall
To validate the state anxiety inventory as a measure of state anxiety by correlating it with HR
Stage trait anxiety inventory
20 items worded in the past tense and rated on a 4 point scale
TAI
20 statements relating to feelings each statement rated on 4 point scale
Validation of state anxiety inventory
Ppt: 20 employees of a London store, 18 after 2 not included due to outliers in HR aged 18-48
Procedure: HR measured when ppt walking to get baseline measure, HR measured in labyrinth when they encountered the scary person, then after the labyrinth.
SAI completed and two HR correlated with SAI
Results: significant association between the two variables therefore the SAI was valid measure of stress
Eye witness study ppts
Visits to the London dungeon offered a reduction in the admission price to complete some questionnaires after there visit
56 volunteers
Procedure
Ppt was pointed out to the actor in the labyrinth walked around slowly for 7 mins about 45 mins later they completed the tour visiting the exhibits in the same order, ppts completed the SAI and TAI and a questionnaire of their memory of the scary person.
Asked to provide a written free recall of a description of them then a cued recall.
Had to identify them in a line up
Ppt rated their confidence in their decision on a scale of 1-100%
Results (state and trait anxiety)
EW part the mean SAI was 49 females higher than males
No gender difference
Ppt that rated themselves as lower anxiety recalled more descriptors
Those with higher anxiety reported more incorrect details
Results (identification of photo line up)
Ppt with high SAI less correct in identifying the correct person in lineup
Males more accurate identification than females
Conclusion
Negative correlation between anxiety and identification of appearance
Higher the anxiety led to more inaccuracies
EWT under stress less accurate in females
