Aim
To test internet form of CBT and see if changing ppts cognitive bias using imagination modification would reduce symptoms of depression.
To see whether this intervention would improve the effectiveness of online CBT
To see if online courses could reduce waiting lists
Sample
Clients recruited by an Australian clinic
Ppt completed an online screening questionnaire and diagnostic interview by phone
69ppts randomly allocated to treatment group or WLC 38 in the treatment group and 31 in WLC
Procedure
Baseline measures from all were taken from before the study (primary and secondary) using various questionnaire measuring depression, distress, disability, anxiety e.g. becks anxiety inventory
TG underwent a 20 minute daily treatment of CBMi for the first week followed by iCBT which lasted 10 weeks. This consisted of 6 sessions with homework, no face to face contact with therapist
After this was over all baseline measures repeated and WLC began treatment
Results
After 1 week of CBMi mean depression score dropped in 7 of the TG and for 2 in WLC
After 11 weeks there were significant changes in 65% of the treatment and 35% of control
Conclusion
CBMi has significant symptom effects in 1 week
CBMi must have increased the effectiveness of the iCBT which was highly effective
Strength and CA
Based heavily on self report - quick easy method of comparison and cheap. The self report scales were tested for reliability and validity
However truth distortions may occur
Quantitative data does not explain why
Strength- control group
WLC completed same questionnaires as TG therefore the effectiveness of the treatment could be established on what was due to interventions and not just passing of time increasing validity
However data should ahve been collected from WLC after their treatment not doing CBMi to test the effectiveness of CBMi
