What are the 4 Levels of Performance? (Start from the bottom)
Foundation, Participation, Performance, Excellence
What does the Foundation level of Performance involve?
Simple lessons, non-competitive, basic levels of sport, usually in the form of PE lessons in Schools
What does the Participation Level of Performance involve?
Regular Sport, extracurricular sport, usually in the form of sports clubs and leisure centres
What does the Performance Level of Performance involve?
Local and Regional coaching and competitions
What does the Excellence Level of Performance involve?
National or International level- few performers get to this level
What is Talent ID?
An initiative set up by UK Sport to recognise individuals who have the potential to play at a higher level
What is the World Class Podium?
An initiative that supports athletes possessing genuine and strong medal potential at the next Olympic/Paralympic Games
What does APA stand for and what does it do?
Athlete Performance Award. A national Lottery funded award aimed at enabling athletes to pursue medal success.
Where does UK Sport receive funding from?
The Government and the National Lottery.
How does UK Sport identify potential elite performers? (Give 3)
Coaching Programmes, Investing in Sporting Events and Investing in Sports that have the most medal potential.
What is Opportunity?
Having the chance to take part and/or get to the top.
What is Provision?
Having the conditions or physical tools to take part and/or get to the top.
What is Esteem?
Issues centred around respect, admiration, value and appreciation.
What factors might there be that affect participation rates in sport? (Give 5)
Where you live, Gender, Age, Disability, Religion/Race
What strategies are there to combat drop out rates? (Give 4)
Psychological Support, Lifestyle Coaches, Wide Provision and levels of teams at University, Financial Support
What are EIS’ (give an example)?
English Institutes of Sport. For example, Manchester Velodrome for indoor cycling.
What is the role of schools for developing Sporting Success?
First Access to sport in PE Lessons. Extracurricular activities form link between club and school. Schools can specialise in some sports and provide coaching. Specialist Facilities like sports halls. First competitive experience- can nominate students for regional trials.
What is the role of Clubs for developing Sporting Success?
Wide range of Sports and activities for people to try new sports. Coaching available- experts in their field. Competition is frequent- regional and national competitions can lead to scouting.
What is the Role of Universities for developing Sporting Success?
Specialist Centres focused on development and S+C, National and regional level competitions, Scouts focus on University sport to select players for teams. Scholarships are provided. Sport combined with study.
