s2 L7 - associative learning Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is aversive stimuli?
something ud want to avoid like a loud shock , a scare
something unpleasant
What is appetitive stimuli?
something u want eg food, water
its pleasant
What does unconditioned response depend on?
type of food
can cause
salivation, approaching, licking - but also avoidance behaviour (for aversive stimuli) can cause avoiding
What is extinction?
The removal of the UCS when the CS is presented alone
reduction in behaviour of the conditioned response
(extinction paradigm or procedure)
What is Spontaneous Recovery?
When there is a gap in between our UCS presentation and a gap between our extinction when presented with the same CS that has been learnt we see a re-emergence of the conditioned response
What is spontaneous recovery?
CR returns after extinction
suggests the learning has not been completely erased
so extinction is new learning rather than unlearning
What are the mechanisms behind extinction?
Excitatory association reinforce response
Inhibitory association prevent response
when both are equally strong, cancel each other out
