S2 L8 - Operant Conditioning Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is the Thorndike Law Of Effect
Responses that create a typically pleasant outcome in a particular situation are more likely to occur again in a similar situation, whereas responses that produce a typically unpleasant outcome are less likely to occur again in the situation
What is shaping?
The process of guiding behaviour to the desired outcome through the use of intermediate stages
Successive approximations to create new behaviour
start w definition of target behaviour - approximations systematically reinforced
dividing the learning goal into subgoals/smaller steps
reinforcing individual steps rather than the complete goal
takes some time but allows learning of complex sequences
For shaping to be effective, what must reinforcers do?
quickly follow the desired response
What will conditioned reinforcers and secondary reinforcers do to primary reinforcer?
if used, they decrease delay between behaviour and the delivery of primary reinforcer
What are conditioned reinforcers or secondary reinforcers?
Previously neutral stimuli that becomes a reinforcer after being paired with primary reinforcer
