sampling Flashcards
(4 cards)
what is volunteer sampling and a strength and weakness of it
volunteer is where pps nominate themselves to take part
strength-
most ethical
is convinient, can quickly gather a sample
weakness- volunteer bias, all may share similar characteristics and traits so is therefore unrepresentative
may have more demand characteristics, feel more inclined to act in a certain way due to being paid etc.
what is opportunity sampling and strengths and weaknesses
using those availbale to you
strengths-
quickest and most economical, meaning can reach conclusions quciker
weaknesses-
prone to researcher bias
likely to be unrepresentative as all ppl in same place at once
what is random sampling and strengths and weaknesses of it
allocating each pps a number, then random number generator
strength-
no researcher bias, no control over who gets picked
most likely to be repsentative as it is random
weakness-
can be very time consuming with a large population
what is snowball sampling and strengths and weaknesses
initial pps recruit new pps to take part
strenght-
can access hard to reach groups
useful for explatory research, rather than generalisable fidnings
cost and time effective, others doing recruitment process
weakness-
having to rely on others
unlikely to be representative as all part of same social network (sample bias)
