Sampling Flashcards
Systematic sampling
Sampling is at a set interval from the initial point which is chosen at random
Areal sampling
Where the unit of sampling is pre-defined (quadrat)
Linear sampling
Where sampling is along a line (transect)
Point sampling
Where separate points or individuals are chosen as the sampling unit
Pragmatic sampling
Sampling in which the samples are chosen from those that are easily and safely available
Random sampling
Where all the elements of data have an equal chance of being selected
Stratified sampling
Method in which the sampling of data is proportional to the whole size
Methods of sampling: Sample points are selected randomly
It is statistically sound but easy to miss something and the same place could be picked more than once
Methods of sampling: Stratified sampling
Takes into account underlying patterns and ensures that all are sampled - no significant aspect is missed but it is biased and invalid
Methods of sampling: Systematic sampling
Items are selected at regular intervals - it is quick and easy but invalid
Methods of sampling: Pragmatic sampling
Samples where you can get access (not on cliff edge etc) - safe and realistic but invalid
