Q

Light Blue Top Tube

A

Sodium citrate - anticoagulant

Used for coagulation studies

Tube must be filled completely and mixed well! Underfilling results in erroneous coag times

Q

Green Top Tube

A

Sodium heparin - anticoagulant

Used for biochemistry panels and CBCs

Nice for small animals (small amount of blood collected) or emergency situations (don’t have to wait for blood to clot)

Q

Cats - Reticulocytes

A

Cats have both aggregate and punctate

  • aggregate –> punctate in 12 hrs
  • punctate –> mature erythrocyte in 10-12 days

***Only aggregate forms are polychromatophilic and thus counted
