Scapulothoracic lecture Flashcards
(26 cards)
Motions of the scapula
Elevation, depression, rotation, protraction, retraction and anterior tilt
Force coupling
Muscles which work together to create one motion, but do not have the same line of pull
Prime movers in scapular elevation
Levator scapula and upper trapezius
Prime movers in scapular depression
Serratus anterior, pectoralis minor and lower trapezius
Structure tested in Adsen’s test
The anterior scalene
Structure tested in Travel’s test
The middle scalene
Structure tested in military brace test
Costaclavicular space
Application of the military brace test
Find the radial pulse, passively extend the arm backwards, apply a forceful breath if required.
Positive sign in military brace and Wright’s tests
Loss of radial pulse
Application of Wright’s test
Find the radial pulse, passively abduct the arm up. Apply forceful breath if required.
Structure being tested by Wright’s test
The pectoralis minor
Positive indication of Halstead’s test
Tingling or numbness in the palm of the hand
Application of Halstead’s test
Extend the arm, elbow and wrist backwards. Side bend neck away if required.
Phalen’s test application
Fully extend both wrists to place the backs of the hands together, then drop the elbows.
Structure being tested by Halstead’s test
Neural tension in the brachial plexus
Structure being tested in Phalen’s test
Carpal tunnel occlusion
Application of Tinnel’s tap
Use the fingers to tap the nerves in the wrist.
Positive indication of Tinnel’s tap
Zinging or pain
What is Tinnel’s tap looking for?
Compression by the anterior compartment of the forearm on the carpal tunnel
What should probably be done before doing any extensive testing on the scapula?
Verify the stability of the GH joint
Prime movers in retraction
Rhomboid and middle trapezius
Prime movers in protraction
Serratus anterior and indirectly pectoralis major
Prime mover of anterior tile
Pectoralis minor
Antagonist to anterior tilt
Long head of the tricep and lower serratus anterior
