What are the main 2 types of schizophrenia?
Characterised by positive and negative symptoms
What are the positive symptoms of SZ?
Hallucinations and Delusions
What are the negative symptoms of SZ?
Speech poverty (Alogia) and Avolition
What is Alogia?
A decrease in speech fluency and productivity
What is avolition?
A reduction of interests and desires and an inability to initiate and persist in goal-directed behaviour
What are the two main classification systems?
DSM-5 and ICD-10
What is the DSM-5 classification of SZ?
Two or more of the following for a significant portion of time during a 1 month period:
Delusions
Hallucinations
Disorganised Speech
Grossly disorganised or catatonic behaviour
Negative Symptoms
What is co-morbidity?
The presence of one or more additional disorders as well as SZ (e.g. depression)
Evaluation of co-morbidity?
Buckley (2009) found around 50% of patients with SZ also have depression or substance abuse
Jesse et al (1996) states that those sufferers of SZ with co-morbid conditions are excluded from research
What is culture bias?
Beliefs on what is viewed as normal and acceptable in society
Evaluation of culture bias?
Pinto and Jones (2008) reported that in Hatiti some people believe that voices are communications from ancestors
