sci yr 10 unit 2 Flashcards
(18 cards)
define evolution
he change in the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the process of natural selection
define biodiversity
the variety of all living things and their interactions
four stages of specation
1.Variation-genetic diffrences within the commuity
2.Birth Rate-more offspring are produced than survie
3.Inheritence-the trait must be inherte, that is coded in the organsimis DNA
4.Selection-some of the varitions are more favourable than others helping the organsim survive and reproduce
5.Time-the freqeuncy of traits in the popultion change over time
reasons why the fossil record is incomlete
becuse fossil mostly form in shallow water enviments so fossils from othere places are very unlikeley
describe the optimal conditions for fossil formation?
-shallow water marine areas
convergent evolution
divergent
-same ansector
-diffrent selction pressures
convergent
-simlear selction pressures
examples of divergent evolution
elaphants and mamoths
dog and wolfs
what is LUCA
Last universal common ancestor
-the last ancetor that is realted to every modern animal
darwin’s five points of natural selection
VISTA
Variation, Inheritance, Selection, Time, and Adaptation
define artifical selction
An evolutionary process where humans choose which traits they want or don’t want in plants or animals.
define natrual selction
Natural selection is the process where animals and plants that are better suited to their environment survive and have more babies.
diffrence between NS and AS
in NS traits are chosen by what make and animal more survialble wheras AS is chosesen by humans on
ubiquitous protein
protiens witch are present in all species that carry out the same function
homologous stuctures
-common ansctor
-diffrent functin
analogous stuctures
-diffrent acestor
-simlear function
