Science: Acids and Bases Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are the characteristics of acids?
Acids have a sour taste and turn litmus paper red.
What are examples of weak acids?
Lemon juice and vinegar.
What are examples of strong acids?
Hydrochloric acid and Sulfuric acid.
What defines a base in a solution?
A base in a solution is called an alkaline, feels soapy, and turns red litmus paper blue.
What are examples of strong bases?
Limewater and Calcium Carbonate.
What are examples of weak bases?
Toothpaste and Indigestion Tablets.
What is a neutral substance?
A neutral substance is neither acidic nor basic.
What does the pH scale indicate?
1-7 is Acidic (Red/Orange), 7 is Neutral (Green), and 7-14 is Basic (Blue/Purple).
What is an alkali?
An alkali is a substance that is said to be alkaline and dissolves in water.
What is an indicator?
An indicator is a chemical that shows, by color change, whether a substance is an acid or a base.
What does litmus paper do?
Litmus paper changes color from blue to red in acids and from red to blue in bases.
What is a universal indicator?
A universal indicator is a dye that changes to different colors according to how strong the acid or base is.
What is neutralization?
Neutralization is when an acid and a base react with each other, destroying the properties of both, and forming salt and water.
How should you treat a bee sting?
A bee sting is acidic, so treat it with a base, e.g., Baking Soda.
How should you treat a wasp sting?
A wasp sting is alkaline, so treat it with an acid, e.g., Vinegar.
