Science: The cell Flashcards
(28 cards)
What are cells?
The basic building blocks of living things.
What is nutrition?
The way in which living things get their food.
What is excretion?
The way in which living things get rid of wastes that they produce.
What is response?
The way in which living things react to changes in their surroundings.
What is reproduction?
The way in which living things produce new living things.
What is an organism?
A living thing.
What is biodiversity?
The range of living things.
What are vertebrates?
Animals that have a backbone.
What are invertebrates?
Animals that do not have a backbone.
What are chromosomes?
Contains many genes.
What are genes?
Made up of DNA.
What do animal cells have?
Have a cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, ribosomes.
What do plant cells have?
Have a cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, vacuole, cytoplasm.
What is the cell membrane?
Holds the contents of the cell in place and controls what passes in and out of the cell, it is a thin layer that surrounds the cell.
What is the nucleus?
Acts as a control center of the cell, is round, contains chromosomes.
What is cytoplasm?
A liquid that surrounds the nucleus, carries out some cell reactions, supports tiny cell structures.
What are mitochondria?
Supply energy to the cell.
What are ribosomes?
Make protein.
What is a vacuole?
A small liquid filled bag in the cytoplasm, gives strength to plant cells.
What is a chloroplast?
Contains a green pigment called chlorophyll that makes food.
What is a microscope?
Is used to view objects that are too small to be seen by the human eye.
What is the eyepiece lens?
Look through this lens, it magnifies the object 10x.
What is the objective lens?
Change the magnification, it magnifies by 4x, 10x or 40x.
What is the nosepiece?
Can rotate to move different objective lenses into position.
